1. Pull the sofa slightly off the wall. If the room allows, leave a slim gap behind the sofa instead of pressing it tightly to the wall. This adds visual breathing room and can make the seating area feel more intentional.
2. Protect one clear walking path. Choose the route used most often—such as the doorway to the sofa or the path to a balcony—and keep it free of baskets, side tables, and floor lamps. A clear route makes the room function better immediately.
3. Use a smaller-scale coffee table. A large coffee table can take up the usable floor in front of a compact sofa. Try a narrow table, a small round option, or a lightweight piece you can shift when guests visit.
4. Choose one flexible side surface. Replace multiple little tables with one compact side table that can move where it is needed. It can hold a drink beside the sofa, then tuck away when you need more floor space.
5. Keep the area beside the arms open. Avoid crowding both sofa arms with matching tables, lamps, or storage. Leaving one side open creates a more generous entry point to the seating area and makes the sofa easier to use.
